M715 Military Truck - One of the first purpose-built military vehicles to come into production form, the original Kaiser Jeep M715 earned its "Five Quarters" badge in reference to its one-and-a-quarter duty rating. With the Jeep Five-Quarter Concept, Jeep has effectively reversed the evolutionary process and created a concept car that is clearly usable from a military pickup truck.
More than just running a sawzall and big tires, the Jeep Five-Quarter concept actually started with the 1968 M-715 and had some powertrain and chassis upgrades to make sure it didn't lose its reputation. The reinforced frame provides a solid foundation for the heavy-duty linkage and coil-spring suspension that replaces the original leaf-spring setup. A Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60 front axle replaces the factory front unit and is set two inches further forward than the original. A Dynatrac ProRock 80 axle is used in the rear, and 40-inch tires sit on 20-inch beadlock wheels at all four corners. Power is provided by a 6.2 liter supercharged Hellcrate Hemi V-8 engine – what else would you expect?

External changes are important. A full carbon-fiber front fascia replaces the original sheet metal, and a 6-foot-long aluminum bed built from a combination of waterboard and slatted wood out back. The convertible soft top is lowered 3.5 inches for a more aggressive look. Working full-length rails stand on the original rocker panels, and modified Jeep Gladiator Rubicon steel bumpers are installed front and rear. The lighting has been improved: the front has HID lamps with LED lights to help illuminate the night, and LED halo lights have been installed in the rear light tanks.

The Jeep Wrangler seat replaces the old-school bucket seats, with the headrests removed to keep things looking old fashioned. The aluminum door panels and dashboard are finished with a water-jet finish for style and shine. In a stroke of clever recycling, a vintage 8-71 supercharger housing was used to encase the transmission and shifter case. A mattress treatment is applied to the floor to increase its durability.
As restomods go, the five-quarter Jeep concept is as useful as they get. The original Kaiser Jeep M715 was built in Toledo, Ohio, where the original J10 and J20 Gladiator of the 1960s and the current Jeep Gladiator JT 2020 were produced, which is just coincidence and karma.

In the mid-1960s it became clear that the US Army's current 4×4 truck, the Dodge M37, needed to be replaced - instead of sending bids to manufacturers for a new vehicle design, the Army looked to current production trucks. which is self-sufficient to keep both the initial cost, as well as ongoing maintenance and parts costs low.
The truck needs four-wheel drive, it needs to be able to carry 1 1/4 tons, and it needs to withstand the rigors of military use. Kaiser Jeep M715 was selected, it was built in several types including M724 (cab and chassis), M725 (four berth ambulance), M726 (telephone maintenance equipment), and other variants on these.

Unusually, the overhead cam has only 6 lobes, each lobe works as both the exhaust valve and the inlet for each cylinder. This allows for better valve management in the cross-flow heads, but adds some complexity to the cam lobe design. The Jeep Tornado engine in standard trim produces 140 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 210 ft lbs of torque at 1,750 rpm with a compression ratio of 8.5:1.
The power was sent to the live axle through a 4-speed manual transmission of Warner T-98, the braking was done through auxiliary drums in the four corners, and both front and rear rode on leaf springs. More than 33,000 examples of the Kaiser Jeep M715 were built during military production from 1967 to 1969, sending them to bases in Vietnam, the Korean DMZ and Europe.
Several thousand M715s have survived and are now in private hands in the United States. They are often targeted for modifications with larger, more powerful engines, upgraded transmissions, larger wheels and tires, and other modifications to improve both on- and off-road capabilities.
Interestingly, the M715 is still in production in South Korea by Kia for use by the South Korean armed forces. Indian automaker Tata is also developing the M715 variant as a candidate for the Indian Army's LSV requirements.

The custom Kaiser Jeep M715 pickup you see here is one of the more refined versions we've seen in recent memory. Now it is driven by General Motors 350 cu. in. (5.7 liter) V8 engine provides more horsepower and torque than the original inline-6.
This V8 is mated to an Oldsmobile automatic transmission to make everyday driving much easier, meaning it's now drivable - something that would have been a struggle in the original 6-cylinder 4-speed.
It has a Dana 60 axle in the front and a Dana 70 axle in the rear, both riding on new heavy-duty flyers and the original drum brakes are retained as is the 2 horsepower winch. Gladiator tools were used to fabricate the grill, fenders, hood, doors and cab of the M715 family. Changes to the sheet metal seal include opening the top of the cab and doors to accommodate military canvas bags. Also, the front fence was cut to clear the military 9.00-16 tires. The new folding windshield is similar to that used on the M38A1.
Buyers Guide: M715 Kaiser Jeep 5/4 Ton Truck
The final 43 prototypes of the Toledo-built M715 series were ordered by the Army in December 1969. These M715s were slightly modified and intended to be tested against the Chevrolet XM705 1 1/4-ton truck design. Unfortunately for Kaiser-Jeep and Chevrolet, neither model was accepted.
The M715 is the first "M" series tactical vehicle to use primarily civilian commercial components. The cargo bed of the M715 is completely new, unlike any other vehicle, military or civilian.
