M818 Military Truck - All M-809 trucks, including the M-818, have a six-cylinder Cummins NHC-250 engine that runs on diesel fuel. The power of the engine is up to 250 horsepower and the engine speed is 2100. What distinguishes the engine from other five-ton trucks is the air intake. This pipe is located on the driver's side of the truck---not to be confused with the passenger side exhaust pipe. All M-809 series trucks have a 5-speed manual transmission, including the M-818, which also includes a two-speed transfer case.

Because it was designed to move weapons and equipment, the M-818 was a towed beast. The manufacturer's allowable load is 37,500 lbs. The truck has a load capacity of 15,000 pounds. The brake system uses a combination of air and fluid to activate the vehicle's ability to stop.

The M-809 series trucks come in three different wheelbase designs. A shorter version of the M-818 was used, weighing 167 inches. The truck itself is about 20,300 pounds. The cab structure is similar to that of the smaller M-39 and M-35 trucks, providing mostly a box for the driver and passengers. However, the engine and front frame were much longer than the 2.5-ton truck compared to the body, as it required a larger Cummins engine. The car is 97.5 inches wide and 85.5 inches tall from the ground to the top of the handlebars. Wheelbase is 10.5 inches off the ground, assuming additional material under the grille. You know, the guy who rides a bike with every accessory and tool known to man. When equipment breaks, he's the first to help with welding, knitting, component replacement or creative gardening. Hats off to those guys, at least a few cool ones. Still, they're impressive, and if Marine Corps veteran Tom Pice ever shows off the gear, they'll be overmatched.

Ton Trucks With Cummins Diesel Engine, Manual Transmission,

We all know that the military is in remote locations, far from normal parts and repair facilities. So did most of the four-wheelers, of course. The Army prepares to keep its vehicles in working order no matter what, and this arrangement from 1969 shows how it was done during the Vietnam War. One thing that quad bikes don't have is the "fun" of shooting, attacking, or bombing them.

This truck is one of the legendary M-809 series 5-ton 6x6, specifically the M-818 tractor. The M-809 series is an evolution of the 1951 M-39 5-ton truck. The M-809 truck appeared in 1969, and was Tom Price's first truck. They are M-813 Loader, M-813A2 Loader, M-814 Long Wheel Loader, M-815 Logger, M-816 Medium Destroyer, M-817 Dumper, M-818 Tractor, M-819 Demolition Tractor ( rotating crane), M-820/M-820A1/M-820A2 extended carriage and M-821 bridge.

The M-809 series was initially produced by Kaiser Jeep's Commercial Products Division and became the flagship product division of Jeep after AMC acquired Kaiser Jeep in 1970. Changed to AM General in 1971, that unit was discontinued from Jeep. In 1970, it became its own company in 1983. An upgraded M-939 version of this 1980s truck is still in service and on the front lines. By the way, the 5-ton was often chosen as the truck in Vietnam, where it was used for convoy protection. They hung armor plates all over the place and installed enough offensive weapons to fool the idiots into attacking convoys.

The 5-ton 6x6 has long been a cornerstone of the US military transport fleet. It's one of those "small" sizes that's good enough for many "heavy" jobs, but still goes a long way. 5 tons mark

Use. The road carrying capacity is 10 tons. Semi-trucks are a bit more difficult off-road when towing a truck because of the limited angle of the fifth wheel, so you might not see Tom Price and his truck in Hell's Revenge in Moab...but you might be surprised how far it goes. The rig can take off with a skilled and determined driver.

One of the big changes in the M-809 truck over the old M-39 is the engine. The first trucks featured a mix of gas, diesel and multi-fuel engines. All M-809s are powered by the naturally aspirated 855ci, 240 horsepower Cummins NH250 diesel. The 855 is one of Cummins' legendary engines and has been used in a variety of applications from trucks to tractors and construction equipment. Later trucks have a larger turbocharged Cummins engine, but the same power.

The auto shop cart also originally dates back to 1969, but has since been updated. Technically, it's called "Shop Equipment, General Purpose Repair, Semi-Running Installed." Instead of the number "M", there is a letter symbol for SGPRSMD. It was built by Southwest Truck Company, which company still made them a few years later. It can be distributed to a variety of units, from transport units and artillery units to engineers. The heavy equipment engineering department probably used the last one, as it has dozens and dozens of similar special tools.

The truck has a 12kw, 240V generator with a 100 percent duty cycle that also powers the welder's 200 amp Hobart motor. The generator engine is a Hercules D298 six-cylinder diesel. A hydraulically operated folding door can be attached to the tent that completely encloses the shop for cold or inclement weather, and a 60,000 Btu diesel heater is part of the kit. Shop air is supplied by a two-stage electric compressor with a 40-gallon tank. The equipment that can be carried varies somewhat, but generally includes mill attachments, shop grinders, valve realtors, drills, 17.5 ton presses, 100 ton presses, monorail hoists, oxy and acetylene welders, workbenches, pullers, There are visas, etc. And many, many tools.

The Corps has a huge and impressive collection of Vietnam-era Navy vehicles that mechanics work on these racks - all types used by the Marine Corps. Although these trucks and vans were issued to the US Army, the Marine Corps used the same equipment, and Price donated them as part of the Marine Corps loan. You may see more of Tom Price's collections in the future.
